# How To Add Custom Fields an Object

## Overview
Every object in Breakcold (People, Companies, Deals, or any custom object) comes with a set of default system fields. You can add your own custom fields on top of these to capture any additional information your team needs — deal scores, event attended, contract value, NPS rating, and more.
Custom fields support a wide range of types, from simple text and numbers to relationships between objects, select dropdowns, and social profile links.

| Works on all objects — You can add custom fields to People, Companies, Deals, and any custom object you've created in Breakcold.
## Step 1 — Navigate to the Object's Settings
1. In the left sidebar, go to **Settings** → **Records**. You'll see the list of all your objects (People, Companies, Deals, and any custom objects).
2. Click on the object you want to add fields to (e.g. **People**).

*Settings → Records — your full list of objects, each showing its type, record count, and number of attributes.*
## Step 2 — Open the Fields List
1. Inside the object settings page, scroll down past the name, icon, and color options to reach the **Fields** section.
2. You'll see all existing fields listed with their **Field name**, **Type**, and **Slug**. System fields are tagged *System* and cannot be deleted.
3. Click the **+ Add Field** button in the top-right corner of the fields list.

*The Fields list — all system and custom fields for the object. Click "+ Add Field" to create a new one.*
## Step 3 — Configure the New Field
The **Create Field** modal opens. Fill in three things:
2. **Name** — the label shown throughout Breakcold (e.g. *"Website"*, *"Status"*, *"Priority"*).
3. **Slug** — auto-generated from the name. Used for API access. Only lowercase letters, numbers, and underscores.
4. **Type** — choose from the full list of field types (see below). This determines what data the field stores and how it appears on records.

*The Create Field modal — enter a name, confirm the auto-generated slug, and pick a field type.*

The full field type list — scroll through to find the right type for your data.
## Special Case: Relation Fields
When you select **Relation** as the type, a second step appears asking you to configure the relationship:
1**: Related Object Type** — which object this field links to (e.g. People, Companies, Deals).
2**: Relation Type** — choose from One to One, One to Many, Many to One, or Many to Many.
3**: Inverse Field** — Breakcold automatically creates a reverse field on the related object so the link works in both directions.

*Relation field setup — select the related object, the cardinality (One to One, Many to Many, etc.), and Breakcold auto-creates the inverse field.*
## Special Case: Select & Multi-Select Fields
When you choose **Select** or **Multi-Select**, Breakcold opens a **Configure Options** panel where you define the choices available in the dropdown. Click **+ Add option** to add as many values as you need, then click **Done**.

*Configure Options — add all your dropdown choices here. You can reorder them by dragging.*
## Step 4 — Save the Field
1. Click **Next** to proceed through any type-specific configuration (e.g. relation setup, select options).
2. Click **Save Changes**. The new field immediately appears in the fields list and on all records for that object.
| Tip — Fields can be reordered by dragging them in the fields list. The order here determines the order they appear on records and in table views.
Changes are confirmed with a toast notification. The fields list updates immediately with the new field count.
## Frequently Asked Questions
**Can I add custom fields to Deals and Companies too?**
Yes. The "+ Add Field" button is available on every object — People, Companies, Deals, and any custom object you've created.
**Can I delete a custom field?**
Yes. Click the **•••** menu next to any custom field and select Delete. System fields cannot be deleted. Note that deleting a field permanently removes all data stored in that field across all records.
**What is the Slug used for?**
The slug is a machine-readable identifier used for API access and formula fields. It's auto-generated from the field name and uses only lowercase letters, numbers, and underscores.
**Can I change a field's type after creating it?**
No — field types are fixed after creation. If you need a different type, delete the existing field and create a new one with the correct type.
**How many custom fields can I add?**
There is no hard limit on the number of custom fields per object.
**Will the new field appear on all existing records?**
Yes — the field is immediately available on all records for that object. It will be empty until you fill it in manually or via import.
