# How to create Static Lists if I don't like Views

Manually group your contacts into named lists using a custom field — no dynamic filters required.

## Overview
Breakcold Views filter contacts dynamically based on conditions. But if you prefer to manually control which contacts belong to a specific group — like a "Cold outreach" list or a "Signup" bucket — you can replicate static lists using a custom **Select field**.
The approach has three parts:
* **Step 1:** Create a custom Select field called "List" (or any name you prefer)
* **Step 2:** Add your list names as selectable options
* **Step 3:** Assign contacts to a list, then filter & save as a View
| Note — This method gives you full manual control. Only people you explicitly assign to a list category will appear in it — unlike Views which update automatically based on conditions.
## Step 1 — Create a Custom "List" Field
First, add a new custom field to your People object to hold the list name for each contact.
1. Go to **People** in the left sidebar.
2. Click the **+** icon at the end of the column headers (or use the field settings) to open the **Create Field** dialog.
3. Set the **Name** to `List` (or whatever label makes sense for you).
4. Leave the **Type** as **Text** for now — you'll configure the options in the next step. Click **Next**.

*Create a new field named "List" on the People object.*
## Step 2 — Configure Field Settings
After naming the field, Breakcold shows advanced settings. Configure whether the field is required and whether it appears in the create form.
1. In the **Field Settings** dialog, decide if the field should be **Required** when creating a new record.
2. Toggle **Show in Create Form** if you want to assign a list category every time you add a new person.
3. Click **Next Step** to proceed to adding your list options.
Decide if the List field should appear in the create form and whether it's required.
## Step 3 — Add Your List Names as Options
Now add the names of your static lists as selectable options. Each option becomes a "bucket" you can assign contacts to.
1. In the **Configure Options** dialog, type your first list name (e.g. `Signup`, `Cold`, `Warm`) and press Enter or click the **+** icon to add it.
2. Add as many options as you need — one per list category.
3. Click **Done** to save the field. A new **List** column will now appear in your People table.

Add one option per list name — e.g. "Signup", "Cold", "Warm", "Closed Won".
| Tip — You can come back and add more options at any time by editing the List field in your object settings.
## Step 4 — Assign Contacts to a List
With the List field created, select your contacts in bulk and assign them to a list category.
1. In the **People** table, check the checkbox next to the contacts you want to add to a list. A bulk action bar appears at the bottom showing how many are selected.
2. Click the **List** action button in the bulk bar to open the list assignment dropdown.
3. Search or select your option (e.g. `Signup`), then click **Add to existing** to assign all selected contacts to that list.

Select contacts in bulk, then assign them to your list using the List field dropdown.
| Note — Use Select all  in the bulk bar to assign your entire contact base to a list at once — useful for mass categorization.
## Step 5 — Filter by List and Save as a View
To see only the contacts in a specific list, use the Filter panel to filter by your List field, then save it as a named View.
1. Click the **Filter** button at the top of the People table.
2. Select the **List** field as the filter condition. Choose **is any of** and select the list name (e.g. `Signup`).
3. The table immediately shows only contacts assigned to that list. Click **Save as View** to give this filtered view a permanent name (e.g. "Signup List").

Filter by your List field to see only contacts in that bucket, then save as a View.
## Step 6 — Access and Manage Your Lists
Once saved, your static list views appear in the left sidebar under People. You can right-click any saved view to rename, duplicate, set as default, or delete it.
Your saved list views live in the sidebar. Right-click to rename, duplicate, or delete.
| Tip — Pin your most-used static list views as Favorites in the sidebar so they're always one click away, regardless of which section of the CRM you're in.
## Frequently Asked Questions
**Can a contact belong to more than one list?**
If you use a single-select field, each contact can only be in one list. To allow multiple lists per contact, consider creating a multi-select field instead.
**What's the difference between this and a View?**
A View dynamically includes contacts that match filter conditions — membership changes automatically. A static list (using this method) only changes when you manually assign or remove contacts from the field value.
**Can I run sequences or workflows from a static list?**
Yes. Once you have a saved View filtering by your List field, you can select all contacts in that view and launch sequences, bulk emails, or workflows from the bulk action bar.
**Can I create lists for Companies or Deals too?**
Yes — the same approach works on any object. Create a custom Select field on Companies or Deals and follow the same steps.
